I am currently writing the ultrasound-guided credentialing requirements for nonradiologists at our hospital. Specifically ultrasound guided thora/para/central lines. We have current credentialing requirements based on # of performed procedures for these, but are being asked to add credentialing requirements for those procedures with ultrasound. Does anyone have such credentials at their institution or know of any guideline to assist in this effort? We all know that a numeric cutoff for procedural credentialing is not the best state, but that is where most of us are currently.
You can reference the Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Guidelines which was a 2008 policy statement from the American College of Emergency Physicians. It was published in Annals of Emergency Medicine.
It was also the basis for several other organizational documents from other societies. They make suggestions as to numbers that could be used for credentialing if the person was not trained as part of their residency. Also of note is the reference to AMA House Resolution 802 for credentialing guidelines for a particular specialty being created by that specialty.
