Hi everybody
The measurement of the nuchal translucency needs a mid sagittal section of the head
On the English fmf website, K Nicolaides has posted a very interesting lecture (for free) with
the définition of the exact mid-sagittal plane of the fetal face :

* The echogenic tip of the nose and rectangular shape of the palate anteriorly
* The translucent diencephalon in the center
* The nuchal membrane posteriorly

More important is the introduction of the zygomatic bone as a marker of a bad plane
Rotation of the head by about 10° away from the midline results in non-visibility of the tip of the nose and the appearance of the zygomatic bone as an echogenic structure between the nasal bone above and the anterior part of the palate below
With further rotation by about 15° from the midline the nasal bone disappears and there is enlargement of the zygomatic bone and coalescence with the palate
I think that it is very important to define exactly what is the true mid sagittal view
a)for true nuchal translucency measurement
b)and to have on the same image the nuchal translucency, the nasal bones and the facial angle (3 markers for 1 image, not to bad !!!)
I am very surprised that these informations are not available on the fmf usa website
Do you know why ?
Do you use this marker ?

In fact, the information concerning the zygomatic bone is in the facial angle chapter

But now, if you want a London fmf certication for nuchal translucency, you have to send 3 perfect images without zygomatic bone
Basing on my experience mid-sagital view of the maxilla, tip of the nose and falx cerebri with dolichocephalon in the centre are the most important landmarks. If you have anechoic regions at the area of the brain or a section through choroid plexuses you are always lateral from mid-sagital view same as having frontal or zygomatic processes of the maxilla in your screen. This is the way I am performing my nuchal measurements being certified by FMF UK in all the 11+0-13+6 weeks markers.
As a beginner , I personally prefer , for NT, axial section through the posterior fossa with cerebellum, CM & lower part of occipital skull in the view.
