Paula Woletz replied to Alvin F. Wells, MD, PhD's discussion 'MSK accredidation' in the group Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Community
There is a wealth of information available at http://www.aium.org/accreditation/gettingStarted.aspx. First, you'll want to know if you and any other interpreting physicians in your practice meet the AIUM training guideline in MSK…

Dr Schwartz is correct. Procedures personally performed in the office are not subject to the Stark Law. Similar issue with EMG studies when the law first came out. Also agree with consulting your healthcare attorney.

no matter what any one posts here the first reply is to contact your health care attny. having said that, to my understanding the regulation is not ment to apply to services performed in your own office (at least it used to be that way). M/C is…

Reimbursement issue: Designated Health Service?

Thumbnail
I heard from a member who is having a problem with reimbursement.  He wrote: It has recently come to my attention that diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound or CPT codes 76881 and 76882 are considered "designated health services" according to Section 1877 of the Social Security Act (the Act) (42 U.S.C. 1395nn), also known as the physician self-referral law and commonly referred to as the "Stark Law":1.     Prohibits a physician from making referrals for certain designated health services (DHS)…See More

I think you're doing all the right things:  You plan on applying to a CAAHEP-accredited program (UMDNJ), and you're making yourself an ideal candidate by doing your best on all your pre-requisite courses and by familiarizing yourself…

Paula Woletz replied to robert g schwartz's discussion 'ARDMS "Registered in MSK US" email' in the group Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Community
AIUM accredits practices; we don't certify individuals.  However, in order to become accredited, a practice must demonstrate (among other things) that the interpreting physicians for the practice meet AIUM training guidelines.

AIUM Practice Accreditation in MSK Ultrasound

Thumbnail
There has been a huge interest in our ultrasound practice accreditation in MSK ultrasound...so much so that our volunteer MSK ultrasound case reviewers can't keep up with the number of cases being submitted. When a practice applies for accreditation, it must submit 4 case studies (images and reports) for each specialty, and if the practice has more than one site, it must send in 1 case study from each additional site it would like to have accredited.  The case studies are sent to two reviewers,…See More

Paula Woletz replied to Jay Rosenfeld's discussion 'Question regarding US guided needle procedures.' in the group Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Community
Just a clarification: The AIUM does not certify individuals.  We do offer ultrasound practice accreditation, which among other things, assesses the qualifications of the physicians who perform and/or interpret the sonograms.  Links to all…

Paula Woletz replied to Todd Rafferty's discussion 'scheduling'
I can't speak for other accreditation programs, but AIUM accreditation has never had exam time guidelines.   Frankly, I can't imagine coming up with a one-size-fits-all time guideline, because exam time can be affected by the types of…

Paula Woletz replied to geri clausen's discussion 'QC program'
I don't know of any universal standard. Some manufacturers claim that certain ultrasound machines don't need ANY routine evaluation/calibration, although AIUM-accredited practices must still meet the requirements regardless of what the…

Paula Woletz replied to geri clausen's discussion 'QC program'
Is this for ICAVL, ICAEL, ACR, or AIUM accreditation? For AIUM, the following is recommended: Daily: Check transducer cables for damage, check transducer housing and transmitting surface for cracks, separations, and discolorations, examine images…
